Abstract

Floristic inventories are fundamental tools for understanding vegetation structure and supporting the diagnosis of ecological integrity in arboreal remnants within semi-arid regions. This study aimed to identify tree species at the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia da Paraíba (IFPB), Santa Luzia campus, and to diagnose the ecological integrity of the arboreal remnants in this area. The assessment was conducted in arboreal-shrub vegetation patches representative of the local physiognomy, using a systematic sampling approach and analyzing the organization of the plant community. Phytosociological parameters, diversity indices, and measures of species dominance and distribution were considered, as commonly applied in forest inventories and ecological studies in semi-arid environments. The analysis revealed a predominance of species belonging to the families Fabaceae and Caesalpiniaceae, with a high concentration of individuals in a limited number of species. Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir. and Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) were the most representative species, both recognized as pioneer taxa frequently associated with environments subjected to anthropogenic disturbance. The values obtained for diversity and evenness indices indicated low floristic diversity and a simplified distribution of individuals among species, reflecting a structurally homogeneous plant community. These structural patterns allow the diagnosis that the arboreal remnants of the IFPB Santa Luzia campus are in an early successional stage, consistent with areas that present a history of land use and occupation and are currently undergoing regeneration processes. Thus, this study contributes to the knowledge of local flora and provides technical support for environmental monitoring, management of Caatinga remnants, and the assessment of vegetation recovery processes in semi-arid environments. In addition, the floristic inventory establishes a reference baseline for future evaluations of successional dynamics and ecological integrity, reinforcing the importance of floristic inventories as essential tools for planning and sustainable management of vegetation remnants in institutional and semi-arid contexts.
